JÓL-060 — Compulsory Jól dues: malt, meat and butter (Ágrip, chapter XXIX)

SOURCE AND GENRE

Compulsory Jól dues: malt, meat and butter (Ágrip, chapter XXIX) — ch. 29 (XXIX in M. J. Driscoll 2008), opening “At jólum skyldi hverr búandi konungi fá”

OLD NORSE

At jólum skyldi hverr búandi konungi fá af arni hverjum mæli malts ok lær af oxa þrévetrum

TRANSLATION

“At Jól each farmer was required to give the king a measure of malt for each hearth and a leg from a three-year-old ox.”

DIRECTLY ATTESTED

The text says each farmer must give the king a measure of malt per hearth, an ox leg and butter; each housewife is separately obliged to supply flax/tow. Obligatory skyldi, the king as beneficiary, and holiday timing are explicit.

CONTEXTUAL

A hostile historical remembrance of Sveinn Knútsson and Ælfgifu’s Christian-era Norwegian rule c. 1030–1035 in a late-twelfth-century synoptic royal history preserved in a later Icelandic manuscript. Quantities are reported as dues, not an ordinary household menu.

MY INTERPRETATION

In the narrative this is a royal fiscal exaction tied to Jól. Malt could be a brewing commodity, but the levy itself neither describes brewing nor demonstrates consumption at the holiday.

NOT ESTABLISHED

No voluntary royal gift exchange, no ancient pagan tax, no evidence that this very malt was brewed into Jól ale, and no evidence of a universal feast menu. Parallel Snorri text not independently collated in this phase.

VARIANTS AND DEPENDENCIES

Original-language checked in the 1936 Indrebø edited online text. M. J. Driscoll, Ágrip, 2nd ed. 2008, chapter XXIX, English was identified through a search-indexed published text extract but the edition PDF and its critical notes were not directly opened in this phase, so the rendering is independent and its exact textual readings are not certified as directly collated. Snorri later related royal-fiscal account is not independent event evidence.
