TRANSLATION

“The king travelled north to Tønsberg and arrived there seven nights before Jól … and a large crowd gathered. King Hákon displayed great generosity over Jól and held discussions with these advisers every day.” In the immediately preceding text he summons officials from Raumaríki, Hadeland and the Uplands, while diplomatic letters and responses are discussed in the Jól setting.

DIRECTLY ATTESTED

Arrival seven nights before Jól; summoned officials; substantial gathering; explicitly characterized royal generosity over Jól; regular royal consultations during the period.

CONTEXTUAL

The events are placed in December 1224 during Hákon's Christian kingship. The saga is a later commissioned royal history, composed soon after his reign, not an unbiased administrative record. The Flateyjarbók chapter numeration (89–90) differs from an older printed chapter division (107–108).

MY INTERPRETATION

The feast season and royal politics appear in the same narrative setting. It is reasonable to discuss royal hospitality as part of courtly sociability, without asserting that Jól was chosen for explicit political manipulation.

NOT ESTABLISHED

A pre-Christian rite; actual quantities of provisions; the routine length of medieval Jól; demonstrable advance provisioning from the summoning alone; a specifically stated royal strategy to use Jól to win political allegiance.

CHRONOLOGIES

Event represented: Jól 1224; testimony/composition: Sturla Þórðarson's royal history, 1264–1265, retrospectively commissioned; surviving transmission: medieval kings'-saga manuscripts including fourteenth-century Flateyjarbók, accessed through a later printed transcription rather than manuscript images.

VARIANTS AND DEPENDENCIES

Flateyjarbók chapter 90 and another edition's chapter 108 are the same episode, not two independent events. Precise manuscript divergences and the 2013 apparatus remain unexamined; the bounded generosity/assembly statement is clear in the inspected version.
