JÓL-049 — A sixty-person visit at Jól (Sturlaugs saga starfsama, ch. 8)

SOURCE AND GENRE

Sturlaugs saga starfsama ch VIII — half-month invitation, sixty guests, first Jól eve

OLD NORSE

Eptir þat búa þeir ferð sína … sex tigir manna

TRANSLATION

“After that they prepared their journey … [they were] sixty men.” Ingólfr and Sturlaugr assemble a party of sixty, properly equipped with weapons and clothing, ride to Haraldr, arrive the first Jól evening, and are seated in places of honor at a prepared feast.

DIRECTLY ATTESTED

A royal invitation for a half-month feast (hálfsmánaðar veizla); discussion of whether to attend; guest-side preparation; sixty companions; arrival on first Jól evening; royal welcome, honored seating and feast. The king's invitation does not itself say “Jól feast”, although the next narrated arrival places the visit on the first Jól evening.

CONTEXTUAL

The earlier reference to hálfsmánaðar veizla specifies what the king offers, not a universal Jól duration. The later royal discussion again reveals his plot-driven aim to enlist someone for the duel.

MY INTERPRETATION

The text imagines organized movement of a considerable guest entourage to a festive royal setting. The number belongs to the narrative, not a measurable historical average.

NOT ESTABLISHED

General Jól party sizes; required sixteen-, fifteen- or fourteen-day festivities; quantities of ale or food that the host prepared; independent historical testimony about early Scandinavian customs.

CHRONOLOGIES

Represented: legendary pre-Christian royal setting. Testimony: late medieval legendary saga text. Surviving: multiple manuscript redactions and later transcriptions/editions; no manuscript image individually checked.

VARIANTS AND DEPENDENCIES

Another distinct passage of the same Sturlaugs saga as JÓL-047–048; not a new independent witness. Earlier chapter III also has a sixty-man company travelling for a non-Jól marriage proposal, which must not be confused with ch. VIII's explicitly Jól-dated arrival.
