JÓL-007 — Helgakviða Hjǫrvarðssonar: Jól-eve vows and the boar

SOURCE AND GENRE

Helgakviða Hjǫrvarðssonar, Finnur 1932, Prosa 6 (corresponding to conventional prose after stanza 30)

OLD NORSE

Heðinn fór einn saman heim ór skógi jólaaptan … Um kveldit óru heitstrengingar. Var fram leiddr sonargǫltr. Lǫgðu menn þar á hendr sínar ok strengðu menn þá heit at bragarfulli.

TRANSLATION

“Heðinn returned home alone from the forest on Jól-eve … That evening vows were being made. A sonargǫltr [ritually significant boar] was led forward. The men laid their hands upon it and then made vows at the bragarfull [a named ceremonial cup/toast].” The prose continues with Heðinn's troubling vow concerning Sváfa, explaining its function in the heroic narrative. The specialist terms are retained because translating them as a fixed sacrificial service or a specific deity's cup would impose an unsupported conclusion.

DIRECTLY ATTESTED

The written prose connects Jól-eve, communal vow-making, the introduction of the named boar, hands placed upon the animal and vows made at the bragarfull. Heðinn's pledge has plot consequences.

CONTEXTUAL

Legendary heroic Norway in the represented story. The text's prose link exists in the medieval Eddic manuscript tradition (principally Codex Regius, GKS 2365 4to, normally dated to about 1270). The actual printed prose layer cannot be dated simply by attributing a neighboring poem to an earlier century. The editor's commentary interprets the cup and boar in broader religious terms, but those glosses are not themselves words in the prose scene.

MY INTERPRETATION

Important evidence that a medieval literary compiler could imagine Jól-eve involving formal vows, a special boar and a formal toast; potential comparanda exist in Hervarar saga but must be assessed for literary interrelationship, not tallied as independent early reports.

NOT ESTABLISHED

An explicitly slaughtered/sacrificed boar in this passage; dedication to Freyr or Þórr in its narrated scene; a universal heathen Jól duty; any verified pre-Christian ritual observation; a specific calendar date or feast duration.

CHRONOLOGIES

(1) Represented: legendary pre-Christian heroic milieu. (2) Textual testimony: Eddic poetic material and linking narrative prose have potentially different origins; the prose's original composition date remains uncertain. (3) Surviving witness: medieval Codex Regius c.1270, not examined as folio images.

VARIANTS AND DEPENDENCIES

Finnur's sonargǫltr and his Prosa 6 editorial division control the quotation. Alternative normalized modern spellings and stanza numbering must be identified by edition, not blended into the Old Norse block. The boar-and-vow motif is similar to JÓL-008's saga passage, without establishing two independent early ritual attestations.

Text attribution

Finnur Jónsson (ed.), De gamle Eddadigte, II (1932), Helgakviða Hjǫrvarðssonar, Prosa 6 in this edition, following this editor's stanza 20. Other commonly used verse numbering identifies it as the prose after stanza 30. Those are not rival events: locate the prose by Heðinn fór … jólaaptan. Finnur spells sonargǫltr; sónargöltr in other edited forms must not be quoted as Finnur's exact spelling.
